Messages from the Dean

April 24, 2017

Dear UC Santa Cruz Community:

Between 1915 and 1923, Armenians were subject to torture, starvation, extermination, massacre, deportations and forced assimilation. An estimated 1.5 million Armenians - including men, women, children and the elderly - were victims of these such atrocities.

On April 24, we commemorate the victims of the Armenian Genocide and of all of the other unrecognized Genocides across the world.

During the 2015-2016 academic year, the Student Union Assembly unanimously passed a resolution in support of the Armenian Students Association to recognize April 24 as the official Day of Remembrance for the Armenian Genocide. I am proud to be part of a campus that cares deeply for members of our campus who are of Armenian descent and join the Student Union Assembly in observing this day of remembrance.

Dear Students,

The last 24 hours have presented challenges and outcomes that members of our community may not have expected.  Like many of you, I was astonished to learn of the results of the presidential election.  As we move through the coming days, weeks, and months, I want to assure all students that the Dean of Students team is here to support you.  We stand with you and support you during this difficult time.

My team has met with many students who are struggling with the impact of what has transpired.  We acknowledge that every student has a perspective on the outcome of the election; those perspectives create the diverse and unique community that is UC Santa Cruz.  We are here to listen and learn along with members of the community.

As we process our reactions and feelings, please be aware of the resources and support services that are available to students.  This includes spaces that are being held for students, events and programs.  A complete list is available here.

The Dean of Students Office and the Slug Support program are available Monday through Friday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm at Hahn Student Services #245.  Drop in for services and support, as well as referrals to on campus and off campus resources.  We are also happy to receive any student groups who are interested in organizing an event or who are seeking resources to produce an activity.  Please contact to connect with our office.

In solidarity,

Lucy Rojas

Interim Dean of Students
